When Daphne Papas left a 30-year career in the global fashion industry, she didn’t know she was about to build one of the most successful franchise consulting practices in the country.
She had spent decades traveling the U.S., opening stores, merchandising, and leading teams—never realizing those experiences were quietly preparing her for her next chapter: helping others become business owners.
Now, nearly a decade later, Daphne has become one of Business Alliance Inc. (BAI)’s most trusted and successful consultants—earning Broker of the Year two years in a row and impacting hundreds of lives through franchising.
But her path to success wasn’t instant. It was a long, honest climb of persistence, humility, and heart.
From Family Franchises to Finding Her Fit
Daphne’s introduction to franchising started long before she ever joined BAI.
“I grew up in family franchises,” she explained. “We owned restaurants and hotel franchises. My brother ran them for years, and before he passed away, he told me, ‘You need to get involved now.’”
That moment changed everything. Overnight, she found herself managing businesses she hadn’t been prepared to run. While researching the industry, she connected with a franchise broker who, after hearing her story, told her she should become one herself.
“I didn’t even know franchise consulting existed,” she laughed. “When he told me about it, I thought, ‘Is this even real?’ But after doing validation calls and talking with people in the network, I realized it was—and I took a leap of faith.”
That leap led her to Business Alliance Inc.—and eventually to building a seven-figure business of her own.
A Tough First Year
Despite her business experience, Daphne’s early days as a consultant were anything but easy.
“I closed my first deal within nine weeks and thought I was a superstar,” she admitted. “Then I went a whole year without another deal.”
The problem wasn’t effort—it was authenticity.
“I stayed stuck in my training. I never made it my own,” she said. “Eventually I realized I needed to take what I learned and tailor it to me. My voice. My process. My rhythm.”
That revelation took time. She describes her first two years as “grinding and learning,” and says she didn’t truly find her stride until year three.
The Three Keys to Success
Looking back, Daphne can pinpoint exactly what changed.
“There are three things that have to happen at the same time for success to click,” she said. “Your pitch, your clients, and your brands.”
- Perfect Your Pitch.
“People can tell when you’re reading a script. You have to be authentic. Clients need to feel that you care—and that takes practice and self-reflection.” - Know Where Your Clients Come From.
“You have to test and figure out which lead sources work for you. Don’t be afraid to change it up if something isn’t working.” - Find the Right Brands.
“You need to trust the brands you represent. They’re the ones your clients will talk to. I stopped working with a brand after clients told me their owner validation calls were negative. That matters.”
When those three areas finally aligned, Daphne says, “the rubber hit the road.”
People Before Profit
While some consultants track numbers obsessively, Daphne takes a different approach.
“I don’t wake up thinking about commissions,” she said. “I wake up thinking about my clients—where they are in the process, what they might need next, and how I can help.”
At any given time, she’s managing more than 20 active candidates, guiding each one through the emotional and logistical journey of business ownership.
Her secret is empathy. “You have to meet people where they are,” she said. “Sometimes they’re ready to buy. Sometimes they’re a year away. My job is to walk beside them until they’re ready.”
That mindset has not only built her success—it’s sustained it.
“I don’t chase money. I chase connection. The rest follows.”
Lessons in Longevity
Nine years in, Daphne’s advice for new or struggling brokers is simple:
- Be patient. “It might take longer than you think. You’re building something real.”
- Adapt often. “If something isn’t working, change it—your leads, your brands, your process. Don’t stay stuck.”
- Stay humble. “This business will humble you every day. That’s a good thing.”
She’s also learned that what works in business today may not work tomorrow. “Leads go hot and cold. Industries go in and out of trend. You’ve got to stay flexible and keep learning.”
Finding Meaning in Every Win
Even after years of success, Daphne’s favorite part of the job remains the same: the people.
“When I wake up to a message saying a client signed, I smile all day. They woke up as business owners. Their life just changed—and I got to be part of that.”
For her, that’s what it’s all about: transforming dreams into decisions and helping people find confidence in the unknown.
“Fear is based on uncertainty,” she said. “My job is to educate them, to walk beside them, and show them they’re not alone.”
